Vista Codec Package The Vista Codec Package is compatible with all versions of Windows XP. The latest releases contain a new Settings Application which enables the user to choose a different splitter 'on the fly' for specific filetypes. The application also lets you to choose from eight different speaker configurations from 'same as input' and all the way up to full 7.1 channel output. Codecs have been a problem for most users at one time or another. This is because there has never been an 'out of the box' working solution that the average computer user could install and just have everything work properly from the beginning. There are several decent codec package solutions out there, but none of them did everything I wanted. I was always in need of a tweak, adjustment, or even a re-installation just to get the codecs I needed/wanted and most of the time, the file still didn't play properly. Breathe Beat and Filter Swamp
These were my first attempts at creating VST plugins. Breathe Beat is basically a bandpass filter that sweeps its cutoff frequency in a random cyclic pattern at a specified tempo. Filter Swamp is four separate bandpass filters which sweep at different rates. Both are useful for adding unpredictably swooshy noises to your compositions. These two begat Breather, which is better and more flexible than both Filter Swamp and Breathe Beat put together, with up to four active filters, running in one of four different modes (lowpass, highpass, bandpass, or notch). ACM is the ancient Windows "Audio Codec Manager", and most applications that can save audio files to WAV do so through ACM, making LAME encoding through it pretty much universal. The catch is that saved files have WAV headers that make the MP3 file unrecognizable to several players and decoders. A solution is using Marco Pontello's RiffStrip to delete the headers. DirectShow is a much more advanced multimedia framework that allows several filters to be chained.
